Climate change induced storm surge flood: A systematic review for future research progression

Abstract

Climate change has significantly amplified the frequency and intensity of storm surge flood events and posed severe threats to coastal areas globally. This review examines the existing literature and carried out the descriptive and thematic analyses on critical issues namely climate change induced storm surge flood susceptibility, storm surge flood risk and storm surge flood vulnerability. The objective of the review was to address the research gaps and to inform future progression of the research domain. We collected the articles on research domain from Scopus and Web of Science databases using relevant keywords and the Boolean search logic AND to ensure targeted search results. Following the PRISMA protocol for inclusion and exclusion criteria, 137 articles were selected for the review. The results revealed that the existing literature on the research domain lacks the standardized frameworks for integrating socio-economic and dynamic climate parameters. The absence of comprehensive global and regional storm surge flood inventories and the limited integration of future climate scenarios with socio-economic dimensions have also been noticed. Moreover, the effectiveness of advanced computational techniques like machine learning and artificial intelligence were less explored. A comprehensive methodology is suggested for assessing the climate change induced storm surge flood management and devising effective mitigation strategies. The proposed framework may be utilized by other coastal geographical regions interested in finding effective, location specific and fair solution to strengthen coastal resilience.
